RecurseChat Privacy Policy

Last Updated: 08/01/2024

Welcome to RecurseChat for macOS (“the App”), and recurse.chat (“the website”). Your privacy is not just a priority to us—it is integral to the design of our App. This Privacy Policy is a commitment to maintaining your trust and ensuring the protection of your information.

1. No Collection of App Usage or Conversations Policy

We unequivocally assure all users that we do not collect, store, monitor, or share any data related to your usage or the conversations you have within the RecurseChat for macOS App. Respecting your privacy is core to our philosophy, and our policy stands firm—ensuring complete confidentiality of your in-App activities and interactions.

You are offered the freedom to select how RecurseChat operates. If you choose to use local AI models, there’s no need for an external API key, reinforcing the standalone privacy of the App.

However, RecurseChat also supports online providers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, and being used as client of OpenAI compatible API endpoints, by creating custom OpenAI API models.

  1. If you opt to use your own Cloud Provider API key within RecurseChat, the data processed through cloud provider’s API is subject to cloud provider’s policies.

You should review and agree to OpenAI’s Privacy Policy or Anthropic’s Privacy Policy if you use an OpenAI or Anthropic API key.

The following points summarize key aspects of OpenAI’s Privacy Policy concerning your data:

OpenAI does not use your business data for model training which includes data accessed from ChatGPT Team, ChatGPT Enterprise, or the OpenAI API Platform.

OpenAI may retain API inputs and outputs for a period of up to 30 days for the purpose of providing service continuity and to monitor for any form of misuse. Post 30 days, the data is expunged from their systems unless a legal obligation necessitates longer retention.

Access to your business data stored within OpenAI’s systems is stringently restricted. It is confined to: OpenAI employees who require this access as part of their role in engineering support, abuse investigation, and legal compliance. Vetted third-party contractors, who are legally bound by non-disclosure and robust security obligations. Their access is strictly for review to prevent and address abuse and misuse.

By using an OpenAI or Anthropic API key within RecurseChat, you acknowledge and agree to OpenAI or Anthropic’s handling of data as described in their Privacy Policy.

  1. If you opt to use RecurseChat as a client of OpenAI compatible API endpoints, and create your custom OpenAI API model, you acknowledge and agree to take full responsibility for the security and reliability of the server selected. In doing so, you agree to the privacy policy of the entity providing the server service.

2. Collection of Aggregated Data

While we prioritize your privacy in the App, we do collect aggregated data such as downloads and general demographics from the Mac App Store. This high-level information is devoid of personal identifiers and is utilized strictly to gauge market trends and to improve the App’s offerings. The process aligns with the Mac App Store’s policies and safeguards against the collection of any personal information through the store.

3. Website Basic Analytics, Collection of Email Addresses and Feedback

This includes measurements of visitor numbers, browsing patterns, and general engagement statistics. It’s important to underline that this data is entirely disconnected from the App’s usage, conversations, or any other personal data. It serves the singular purpose of enhancing our website and cannot, in any form, be traced back to individual App activity.

In our continuous effort to improve RecurseChat and create the best possible user experience, we may collect your email address and feedback when you voluntarily provide it through our website. This collection is designed with the purpose of:

  • Communicating with you directly regarding your inquiries, issues, or feedback.
  • Sending you updates and information about RecurseChat and related services, if you opt-in to receive such communications.

5. Updates to the Privacy Policy

We reserve the authority to adjust this Privacy Policy as necessary. In circumstances where a change will materially change the way in which we collect or use your personal information or data, we will communicate on this page with an updated “Last Updated” date and notify the App users appropriately.
